The Rosie Project
Graeme Simsion
As I mentioned in my bio, over the last year my book preference has changed from mainly fiction books to non-fiction. However I still enjoy reading well written fiction, especially when they are easy to read, imaginative and engaging and The Rosie Project is one of those books!
My mother-in-law was the person to thank in recommending this book to me when she was visiting us in Houston. At that time, she had not read it herself but she had read good reviews about the book. She was recommending it on the basis that the reviews made the main character in the book, Don, sound similar to my husband. After actually reading the book, Don has a syndrome called Asperger’s which is a neurological disorder that involves impairments in language, communication and social skills (in his case it's social skills). In addition, individuals with Asperger’s might also be involve in obsessive and repetitive behaviours like those with OCD, although the two (Asperger’s and OCD) are technically not the same. Fortunately, my husband definitely doesn’t have OCD or Asperger’s syndrome otherwise it would drive me crazy. Anyway, I bought The Rosie Project on Amazon and as soon as I started reading it, I fell in love with the book!
It was such a lovely and delightful book! Graeme who is an Australian author (I only realised this at the end!) did a very good job on portraying Don’s personality such that readers can easily create a picture of him in their head and feel like they know him. It was so engaging that I felt like I was with him throughout the entire book. The book focused a lot on Don’s perspective and there is a lack of attention to other characters, but overall I still think it was well structured. The story is short and sweet but has a lot of content on personality, love, and friendship. I loved every bit of the book! It was a humorous, romantic, and intelligently written book. Some part of it made me laugh out loud and it was so captivating that I could hardly put the book down to sleep or eat or even work! Definitely a highly recommended read for everyone out there :)
